Stepping Deeper into Japan’s Hidden Soul

Adachi Museum of Art: A Living Canvas

Our cultural immersion began at the renowned Adachi Museum of Art. Famous for its world-class collection of modern Japanese paintings, the museum is perhaps even more celebrated for its exquisite gardens. Every window frames a living work of art — from perfectly sculpted pines to raked white gravel that seems to flow like water. The gardens change with the seasons, offering a dynamic expression of nature’s beauty year-round. It’s a place so beloved that even famous sumo wrestler Yokozuna Hakuho has named it as one of his favorite destinations. Walking through the museum felt like stepping into a philosophy: the seamless blending of human creativity and nature’s quiet strength. The peacefulness here is tangible, offering visitors a profound sense of connection to the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi — beauty found in simplicity and imperfection.

Kanaya Ne Shrine

‘‘Sacred, Silent, Snowy’’

Saginoyusou: Ryokan Hospitality at Its Finest

After an afternoon immersed in art, I journeyed to Saginoyusou, a historic ryokan founded in 1909. This traditional inn, set amidst the therapeutic waters of Saginoyu Onsen, offers only 20 rooms, each thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. My room featured tatami mat floors, sliding shoji screens, and a serene atmosphere that felt worlds away from everyday life. One of the highlights was reserving a private outdoor onsen at the ryokan. In the quiet dark of night, I enjoyed a peaceful, restorative soak under the stars — completely alone, surrounded by nature and the soft whisper of the wind. It was an unforgettable, almost spiritual experience. Dinner was a masterpiece of kaiseki dining, a multi-course experience showcasing seasonal local ingredients, beautifully presented to please all senses. Breakfast was equally memorable, with delicate flavors and a tranquil morning view of the ryokan gardens dusted in soft morning mist. Staying at Saginoyusou wasn't just accommodation; it was a cultural experience in itself, an invitation to slow down and savour life's quieter luxuries.

Kanaya Ne Shrine: A Sacred Pause in the Snow

The following morning brought us to the serene Kanaya Ne Shrine, a lesser-known but deeply spiritual site. Historically a place of worship for those involved in iron and gold work, this shrine offered a deeply personal and unforgettable experience. As we arrived, delicate snowflakes began to fall, cloaking the shrine grounds in a pristine white blanket. The soft chime of iron wind bells floated on the crisp air, creating a soundscape that felt almost otherworldly.

During a private prayer ceremony led by the shrine's priest, we were invited to reflect and offer wishes for strength and resilience. It was a profoundly moving moment, made even more magical by the gentle snowfall. Standing there, enveloped by nature, tradition, and quiet reverence, we felt a deep connection to the sacred spirit of Japan. It was a true reminder of how spirituality and craftsmanship are interwoven into everyday life.

Tanya Workshop Hiromitu:

Forging a Personal Connection

The most immersive and unforgettable part of our journey was a full-day workshop at Kaji Kobo Hiromitsu. This family-run forge has preserved the art of tatara iron making and blacksmithing since the Edo period (1603-1867), passing down their skills over ten generations. Rather than simply observing, we were invited to become part of this living tradition.

Under the careful guidance of a master swordsmith, I spent the entire day forging a small iron bowl. From heating the metal in the roaring furnace to striking it rhythmically with a hammer on the anvil, each step demanded patience, concentration, and respect for the centuries of tradition behind every movement. Feeling the heat on my face, hearing the steady ring of iron, and witnessing the slow transformation from raw material to finished form was humbling. By the end of the day, my bowl wasn't just an object — it was a story of perseverance, artistry, and deep cultural appreciation.
