Renowned for some of the finest dining at sea, beautifully appointed accommodation and a relaxed country club atmosphere, Oceania Vista offers an elegant cruising experience that perfectly balances luxury, comfort and immersive destinations.

Choosing a cruise is about far more than selecting an itinerary; it's about finding a ship whose atmosphere, service and style genuinely suit the way you like to travel. As an independent luxury travel adviser, I wanted to experience Oceania Vista for myself rather than rely on brochures or supplier presentations. During a ten-night voyage from Reykjavik to Southampton, taking in Iceland, Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium, I discovered a ship that combines outstanding cuisine, spacious accommodation and destination-rich cruising in a way that feels effortlessly elegant rather than overly formal.

When plans change at sea.

One of the realities of cruising is that itineraries can occasionally change, particularly in destinations such as Iceland and Norway where weather and sea conditions can be unpredictable. During my voyage, adverse weather meant our scheduled calls to Djúpivogur, Ålesund and Måløy were replaced with an overnight stay in Oslo. Whilst it was naturally disappointing to miss some of the planned ports, the captain kept guests well informed throughout, and it was clear that safety was always the overriding priority.

If you had booked your shore excursions directly through Oceania Cruises, these were automatically cancelled and refunded, making the process completely straightforward. However, if you choose to arrange independent excursions, it's worth checking the supplier's cancellation policy before you travel. I would also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes cover for missed ports and cancelled excursions, as this can provide valuable financial protection should your itinerary change unexpectedly.

Life On Board Oceania Vista

Whilst the destinations are undoubtedly a key part of any cruise, I also wanted to experience what everyday life on board Oceania Vista was really like. As an independent luxury travel adviser, it was important for me to understand not only the ports of call but also the ship itself, as this is where guests spend much of their holiday.

With several sea days and the opportunity to remain on board whilst many guests explored ashore, I was able to experience Vista from a different perspective. It gave me time to enjoy the ship's elegant public spaces, relax by the pool, visit the Aquamar Spa, make full use of the fitness facilities and simply appreciate the relaxed pace of life on board. It also allowed me to see how consistently high the levels of service remained throughout the day, whether enjoying a quiet coffee, lunch by the pool or simply finding a comfortable corner to read or catch up on work.

Rather than feeling that I was missing out, spending time on board gave me a far better understanding of why so many guests choose Oceania not only for its itineraries, but for the ship itself.

Each evening, a copy of the following day's programme was delivered to my stateroom, outlining everything taking place on board. The choice was impressive, with fitness classes in the Technogym-equipped fitness centre, including spin, yoga and Pilates, alongside enrichment lectures, quizzes, bridge, pickleball, mini golf, live music and a variety of other activities. Whether you prefer to keep active or simply relax, there was always something to enjoy without ever feeling that you had to fill every moment.

One feature that particularly impressed me was the library. It is quite simply the largest and best-stocked library I have ever seen on a cruise ship, with an extensive collection of books covering a wide range of genres. It's a wonderfully peaceful space to relax with a good book, enjoy the ocean views or simply escape for a little quiet time – another example of the thoughtful touches that make Oceania Vista feel so different.

A Home at Sea.

For the next ten nights, Veranda Stateroom 8033 became my home at sea.My Veranda Stateroom (8033) was located on Deck 8, slightly aft of midships on the starboard side. I found it to be an excellent location—quiet, conveniently positioned and within easy walking distance of the ship's restaurants, lounges and public areas.

One of the first things that impressed me was the amount of storage. There was more than enough wardrobe and drawer space to unpack completely, making it easy to settle in rather than living out of a suitcase. The bathroom was equally impressive, offering a generous walk-in shower, excellent lighting and plenty of room for toiletries – features that are often lacking on many cruise ships.

The bed was exceptionally comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep throughout the voyage, while the private veranda quickly became one of my favourite places on board. Whether enjoying a morning coffee or simply relaxing wrapped in the cosy blanket provided by Oceania, it was the perfect spot to watch the ever-changing scenery and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of life at sea.

One feature I particularly like about Oceania Vista is that there are no inside cabins. Every guest enjoys either a French Veranda, a private veranda or one of the ship's beautifully appointed suites, ensuring that everyone benefits from natural light and a connection with the ocean. For those looking to enhance their experience even further, Concierge Level Veranda Staterooms include additional privileges such as access to the exclusive Concierge Lounge, complimentary laundry, priority speciality restaurant reservations and unlimited access to the Aquamar Spa Terrace.

The Finest Cuisine at Sea?

One of the reasons Oceania Cruises has developed such a loyal following is its reputation for exceptional cuisine. Before boarding Vista, I had heard countless guests describe it as offering "The Finest Cuisine at Sea", so I was naturally keen to discover whether it really lived up to the hype.

During my voyage, I made it my mission to experience as many of the dining venues as possible. From healthy breakfasts at Aquamar Kitchen and leisurely lunches at Waves Grill to elegant dinners in the Grand Dining Room and each of the speciality restaurants, I quickly realised that dining on Oceania Vista is far more than simply eating – it is one of the highlights of the entire cruise experience.

What impressed me most was the consistency. Whether enjoying breakfast, a relaxed lunch by the pool or a beautifully presented evening meal, the quality of the ingredients, attentive service and relaxed atmosphere remained consistently high throughout my voyage.

The Grand Dining Room

The Grand Dining Room is the ship's main restaurant and is open daily for breakfast, lunch (on sea days) and dinner. Unlike many cruise lines, there are no fixed dining times or allocated tables, allowing guests the flexibility to dine when it suits them. The menu changes daily and offers an impressive selection of beautifully prepared dishes, complemented by attentive yet unhurried service in elegant surroundings.

Terrace Café

Far removed from what many people imagine a buffet to be, Terrace Café offers an extensive choice of freshly prepared dishes throughout the day. Whether enjoying breakfast overlooking the ocean, a leisurely lunch or themed evening dining, the quality and variety were excellent, with plenty of freshly cooked options available.

Waves Grill

Located beside the pool, Waves Grill became one of my favourite lunchtime spots. Serving freshly cooked burgers, sandwiches, salads and grilled favourites, it offered the perfect informal alternative whilst still maintaining Oceania's high culinary standards.

Aquamar Kitchen

One of Vista's newer concepts, Aquamar Kitchen focuses on fresh, healthy and wellness-inspired cuisine. I particularly enjoyed breakfast here, where lighter dishes, smoothies and freshly prepared options provided a refreshing alternative to a traditional cruise breakfast.

Toscana

Toscana celebrates authentic Italian cuisine with handmade pasta, beautifully prepared seafood and classic regional dishes served in elegant surroundings. The attention to detail and warm service made it one of the highlights of my dining experience.

Jacques

Created in partnership with the late master chef Jacques Pépin, this elegant French restaurant offers timeless classics prepared with skill and simplicity. From beautifully presented starters to rich desserts, Jacques delivers a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience.

Red Ginger

Red Ginger brings together the vibrant flavours of Asia in a contemporary setting. The beautifully balanced menu combines dishes inspired by Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Japan, creating one of the most distinctive dining experiences on board.

Polo Grill

For lovers of classic steakhouse dining, Polo Grill is a must. Premium steaks, fresh seafood and attentive service combine to create an elegant restaurant that consistently ranks amongst guests' favourites.

In-Stateroom Dining

Complimentary room service is available 24 hours a day, offering the flexibility to enjoy breakfast on your veranda, a quiet lunch or a late-night snack in the comfort of your stateroom. It is a feature I always appreciate and another example of Oceania's commitment to guest comfort.

Baristas

Coffee lovers will quickly discover Baristas, Vista's welcoming coffee bar serving speciality coffees, teas and tempting pastries throughout the day. It became a lovely place to pause between activities, whether enjoying a cappuccino, catching up on emails or simply watching the world go by. Best of all, speciality coffees are included, making it easy to pop in whenever the mood takes you.

Afternoon Tea in Horizons

One of the unexpected highlights of my voyage was Afternoon Tea, served daily in Horizons. With panoramic ocean views, attentive service and live classical music, it offers a wonderfully civilised way to spend an afternoon at sea. Guests can enjoy a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, together with an array of beautifully presented cakes and pastries, all served with a choice of fine teas or coffee.

It was one of those simple experiences that perfectly captured the relaxed elegance of Oceania Vista and is well worth making time for during your cruise.

My Overall Dining Impression

Dining is undoubtedly one of Oceania Vista's greatest strengths. Every restaurant has its own character, yet all share the same commitment to quality, attentive service and beautifully prepared food. Whether you prefer fine dining, healthy cuisine, casual lunches by the pool or the flexibility of room service, Vista offers an outstanding culinary experience that more than lives up to Oceania's reputation

Reflections

Before boarding Oceania Vista, I was curious to discover whether it would live up to its reputation. After ten nights on board, I left with a genuine appreciation of what makes this cruise line so popular with discerning travellers.

For me, it wasn't one individual feature that stood out, but the complete experience. The spacious accommodation, exceptional cuisine, attentive yet unobtrusive service and relaxed atmosphere all came together to create a style of cruising that felt elegant, comfortable and refreshingly unpretentious.

Of course, every traveller is different, and no cruise line is the perfect fit for everyone. However, if you appreciate outstanding food, beautifully designed surroundings, excellent service and destination-rich itineraries, I can understand why so many guests return to Oceania time and again.
