A Journey I'll Never Forget: My Son's Wedding in Hong Kong.

More than a trip to Hong Kong, this was a journey to celebrate one of life's most important milestones.

Celebrating a New Chapter.

After arriving in Hong Kong, our base for the celebrations was The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong. From the moment we stepped into the hotel, we knew this was going to be a very special stay. Travelling for my son's wedding made the occasion particularly meaningful, and the hotel immediately made us feel welcome.

Club Lounge check-in was seamless and relaxed, allowing us to settle in while enjoying spectacular views across Victoria Harbour. When we entered our room, we were greeted by beautiful decorations and thoughtful touches to mark the celebrations ahead. It was a wonderful gesture and instantly made the stay feel even more personal.

As we looked out across the skyline from our room high above the city, the excitement of the days ahead really began to sink in. The combination of exceptional service, breathtaking views and the anticipation of such an important family occasion created the perfect start to our time in Hong Kong.

One of the things that makes The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong so remarkable is its position high above the city. Everywhere we went, there seemed to be another breathtaking view waiting for us. Whether it was watching the ferries cross Victoria Harbour, seeing the city lights begin to sparkle at dusk or simply enjoying a quiet moment in the Club Lounge, Hong Kong provided a constantly changing backdrop throughout our stay.

The Club Lounge quickly became one of our favourite places within the hotel. From breakfast each morning to afternoon refreshments and evening cocktails, it offered exceptional service, delicious food and a relaxed atmosphere away from the bustle of the city below. It was also the perfect place for family members to gather between wedding events and enjoy time together.

The hotel's indoor swimming pool was equally impressive, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing panoramic views across the skyline. Even the fitness centre makes the most of its extraordinary setting, turning a workout into a sightseeing experience. Despite being located in the heart of one of the world's busiest cities, The Ritz-Carlton provided a genuine sense of calm and luxury throughout our stay.

Discovering Hong Kong Together.

With several days before the wedding celebrations began, we took the opportunity to explore some of the many different sides of Hong Kong. While the city's famous skyline is impressive, it was often the quieter moments that left the greatest impression.

We spent time wandering through the peaceful surroundings of Hong Kong Park, a green oasis tucked amongst the skyscrapers, and experienced the unique Mid-Levels Escalator, which offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life in the city. Exploring the streets around Tsuen Wan and browsing the local markets provided a completely different perspective, away from the better-known tourist areas.

Getting around was incredibly easy thanks to Hong Kong's excellent MTR system, which allowed us to travel quickly and efficiently across the city. A journey on the iconic Star Ferry offered some of the best views of Victoria Harbour, while a relaxing day at Golden Beach revealed yet another side of Hong Kong that many visitors never see.

What struck me most was the contrast. Within a single day, you can move from bustling city streets and vibrant local markets to peaceful parks, sandy beaches and stunning harbour views. It is this diversity that makes Hong Kong such a fascinating destination and one that rewards visitors who venture beyond the obvious attractions.

The day we had all travelled so far for had finally arrived. Set in the heart of Hong Kong, St John's Cathedral provided a beautiful and timeless setting for the wedding. Surrounded by family and friends who had gathered from different parts of the world, it was a truly special occasion and one filled with emotion, joy and pride.

As a mother, watching my son begin this new chapter of his life was an unforgettable moment. The cathedral's peaceful atmosphere offered a striking contrast to the energy of the city outside, making the ceremony feel even more intimate and meaningful.

Following the service, there was time to celebrate, catch up with family members and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere that comes when loved ones are brought together for such a happy occasion. While Hong Kong provided an incredible backdrop, the day itself was all about family, friendship and creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Chinese Banquet.

The celebrations continued with a traditional Chinese wedding banquet at Aberdeen Marina Club, giving many of us the opportunity to experience an important part of Hong Kong's wedding culture. The setting was elegant, the atmosphere vibrant and the sense of occasion unmistakable.

As course after course was served, accompanied by heartfelt speeches, laughter and good wishes for the newlyweds, it became clear that this was far more than simply a wedding reception. It was a celebration of family, tradition and the coming together of two cultures. The attention to detail and generosity of hospitality made the evening feel incredibly special.

For many guests, it was their first experience of a Chinese wedding banquet, making it all the more memorable. Sharing this unique cultural experience with family and friends added another layer to an already extraordinary day and created memories that will stay with us long after the celebrations had ended.

As the celebrations drew to a close, there was one final experience to enjoy. We made our way to Ozone, The Ritz-Carlton's iconic rooftop bar, perched high above the glittering skyline of Hong Kong. With panoramic views stretching across Victoria Harbour and beyond, it felt like the perfect place to bring such a memorable day to an end.

As we raised a glass together and reflected on everything that had taken place, there was a real sense of gratitude. The wedding had brought family and friends together from around the world, creating moments of laughter, connection and celebration that simply wouldn't have happened otherwise. Looking out across the city lights, it was hard not to feel emotional about the significance of the occasion and all that lay ahead for the newlyweds.

I've been fortunate to visit many remarkable destinations during my career in travel, but some places become special for reasons that have nothing to do with sightseeing. Hong Kong will always be one of them. Beyond the skyline, the harbour and the wonderful experiences, it is the place where my son began a new chapter of his life. For that reason alone, it will always hold a very special place in my heart.
